Position Summary

The Linux specialist in UHN Digital's Infrastructure Servers and Storage position provides real-time operational support for Linux/UNIX servers. The role is a combination of design and build activities supporting new IT infrastructure projects and support activities of existing server and storage equipment.

Duties

The principal responsibilities of the role include:

  • Performing all aspects of server and storage deployments, management, and maintenance;
  • Taking a supporting role on developing technical strategies;
  • Operating with a moderate degree of autonomy, exercising independent judgment to resolve moderately complex problems;
  • Performing 3rd level incident and problem management;
  • Participating in Enterprise Architecture and Project Management Initiatives;
  • Acting as a liaison between customers, departments and other technical teams to lead technology solutions strategy and delivery;
  • Acting as a lead for change management activities in your domain(s) of expertise;
  • Recommending and evaluating systems, hardware and software solutions including new solution acquisitions and upgrades to existing technologies;
  • Contributing to the development and/or the improvement of policies and procedures; and
  • Performing cross-functional and/or or other duties as assigned and/or requested.
  • Server and storage management—both hardware and software, and on premises and cloud-based.
  • Provisioning and configuration of servers from physical installation, OS install, monitoring, patching and backup applications.
  • Storage management and deploying disks to servers or as file shares as required.
  • Supporting developers with infrastructure specific help (e.g. os configuration).
  • L3 support for all Servers and Storage queue incidents, problems, and changes.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working in a corporate environment managing, monitoring and/or operating Linux servers and storage systems at the level of a system or network administrator.
  • Working experience doing Linux server management, preferably at scale. Familiarity with Windows server management.
  • Working experience with package management tools (apt/dnf, SCCM, etc.)
  • Working experience in a virtualized environment on various hypervisors (VMware, Azure, HyperV, etc.)
  • Working experience with on-premise and cloud infrastructure.
  • Practical working knowledge of local area networks: VLANs, TCP/IP, DNS, and DHCP.
  • Practical working knowledge of Ansible, Git, Terraform, and other DevOps technologies.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes or other containerization technologies.
  • Familiarity with logging and monitoring tools (Splunk, Graylog, Solarwinds, etc.)
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to effectively deal with high priority unscheduled tasks and problems.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and familiarity with Windows, MacOS, and Linux desktops.
