The Tax Analytics Unit within the Taxation Policy Division plays an integral role in supporting data-driven policy development across corporate and commodity taxes including HST, fuel, cannabis, vaping and land transfer tax. The division includes policy, legislative design, and analytics groups, producing an intense collaborative environment. It is a face-paced, dynamic division with immense breadth of subject matter, and topical files at the cutting edge of modern tax policy.

What can I expect to do in this role?
In this role, you will:
• Develop policy options and provide analysis through data modelling and other quantitative research • Lead policy analysis and development activities • Provide policy and quantitative guidance to staff in the development of tax expenditure estimates • Identify and analyze issues relevant to provincial decision-making • Prepare a range of briefing materials (e.g. technical reports and analyses, sections of budget papers, briefing notes, options papers) • Represent the Branch and Ministry on multi-stakeholder consultation sessions and intra/inter-ministry working committees, task forces and projects • Liaise with federal and provincial counterparts to share information and consult on joint issues and projects
How do I qualify?
Policy Development & Technical Knowledge:
• You have knowledge of the theory, principles and methodologies of economics, finance, and tax accounting to provide advice and recommendations to guide policy development • You can lead tax policy development • You can acquire and apply knowledge of government strategic directions concerning the Province's economy
Analytical and Planning Skills:
• You understand quantitative and statistical methodologies to develop policy options • You can evaluate the economic and fiscal impact of new and existing policies, programs, initiatives, and business plans • You can use your analytical expertise to interpret economic data and contribute to the development of tax policy • You can design and plan research studies and projects that encompass economic modelling • You can identify and develop economic policy options, fiscal frameworks and implementation plans • You can identify emerging microeconomic and financial issues, trends, developments and technologies impacting tax policy
Communication Skills:
• You have written communication skills to prepare reports and briefing materials • You have oral communication skills to make presentations to senior management • You are proficient with research, economic, statistical, word processing, spreadsheet, graphic and database software to research and prepare analyses, briefing materials, presentations, and reports
Relationship Management Skills:
• You have strong relationship management skills to establish key stakeholder linkages across the government • You can work cooperatively in policy development projects and exchange economic data, expenditure data and other policy information • You can persuade and influence senior management to adopt favourable policy and program recommendations
