The Global Performance Measurement Team is responsible for deploying, managing and maintaining performance measurement solutions which include Planning and Forecast applications, and Financial Information Systems within Scotiabank catering to various business lines and enterprise finance functions.
The Data Engineer will design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines and systems to support the financial information management needs of IT&S Finance, enterprise finance functions, and the broader IT organization. This role involves developing and optimizing ETL processes, ensuring data integrity, and enabling advanced analytics to drive strategic business decisions. The Data Engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, analysts, finance professionals, and the FIS team, to deliver cost-efficient, effective, and timely data solutions, including system enhancements, reporting, and performance measurement initiatives.
Is this role right for you? In this role you will:
Lead Data Pipeline Development: Design, develop, and maintain scalable, secure, and efficient data pipelines to ingest, process, and transform large volumes of financial data from diverse sources (e.g., market feeds, transaction systems, IT&S Finance systems, Planning and Forecast applications, and third-party APIs).
ETL Development: Build and automate ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes using tools such as Data Stage to integrate structured and unstructured financial data into data warehouses or lakes, supporting routine operations, ad hoc analysis, and enterprise reporting.
Systems Enhancements & Support: Provide timely development, user testing, implementation, administration, maintenance, and production support for IT&S Finance and Financial Information Systems, ensuring high reliability, performance, availability, and connectivity for financial reporting and analytics.
Data Quality & Governance: Implement data quality checks, validation rules, and monitoring systems to ensure accuracy, consistency, and reliability of financial data, adhering to best practices and regulatory requirements (e.g., GDPR, CCPA, or SEC regulations).
Project Management: Support financial systems initiatives by gathering requirements, designing system solutions, managing project plans (e.g., user agreements, resource requirements, and key deliverables), and championing change management, communication, and training for new or enhanced systems.
Technology Solutions Evaluation: Collaborate with the Senior Manager to identify, assess, and evaluate technology solutions (e.g., Oracle Hyperion Planning, Apptio) to enhance IT&S Finance objectives, preparing business case proposals and stakeholder presentations.
Continuous Improvement: Execute ongoing process and service redesign to drive continuous improvement in data pipelines, reporting processes, and system performance, ensuring alignment with evolving business needs.
Collaboration: Work collaboratively with peers, IT&S Finance clients, vendors, and stakeholders to deliver on team priorities, including special projects, system enhancements, and reporting requests.
Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We'd love to work with you if you have:
Proficiency in programming languages such as Python.
Strong SQL skills for querying and optimizing relational and OLAP databases (e.g., MS SQL Server, Oracle SQL, PostgreSQL, MySQL) with 8-10 years of experience preferred.
5+ years of experience with reporting tools such as Power BI or Oracle Business Intelligence (OBIEE).
Experience with MS SQL Server (SSRS, SSIS, SSAS) and related applications.
Working knowledge of Financial Management tools (Oracle Hyperion Planning, Oracle Business Intelligence, etc.) and IT Financial Management tools (Apptio, vRealize, etc.) is preferred
Experience in Reporting tools such as Power BI, OBIEE - 5 years
Working knowledge of financial management and reporting processes
Ability to work independently, solving complex issues with creative and innovative solutions.
Finely tuned leadership skills, effective communication abilities (both verbal and written), with a client-focused service orientation
Ability to multi-task and deliver high-quality results under very tight deadlines; continuously assess priorities and business requirements, and balance between regular deliverables and project work
Ability to work effectively in a team environment with peers and superiors across organizational lines, and show negotiating tact and diplomacy in achieving objectives
