The Lead Cloud Engineer will be a member of the team responsible for supporting the Digital Excellence in Health cloud strategy and roadmap. Reporting to and working closely with the team leadership (Team Lead, Manager and/or Director) of Platform and Cloud Operations, the Lead Cloud Engineer is responsible for delivering cloud strategies to support business objectives and provide leadership in cloud migrations of on-premises applications as well as digital transformation.

The Lead Cloud Engineer will work closely with other IT infrastructure specialists, Enterprise Architects and Security to design and integrate cloud and on-premises services, enabling secure operations in the cloud environment. This position will provide leadership in infrastructure migration methodologies and techniques to migrate large scale enterprise applications and services. Serving as an internal consultant and advisor to project teams and individuals at all levels, the Lead Cloud Engineer is responsible for providing leadership in cloud computing across Digital Excellence in Health and business programs, as well as providing technical consultation and advisory to decision makers.

Viewed as a subject matter expert in cloud technologies, implementation and support, the Lead Cloud Engineer will define business cases for cloud solutions, design and build prototypes for proof of concept and design and build solutions in a production environment. This includes keeping up-to-date on cloud technologies and tools, assist IT leadership in developing roadmap for cloud integration and strategies, provide cloud technical mentoring to strengthen cloud support, provide quality services and developing and maintaining a disaster recovery plan in relation to cloud services and systems within the IT Teams. (i.e. Infrastructure, Network, Security and Application)

As a Lead Cloud Engineer, you will play a leading role in ensuring that Ontario Health and partner solutions support the needs of the business. The Lead Cloud Engineer looks at enterprise-wide solutions and is considered a technical expert on a broad range of products/services in the cloud. The Lead Cloud Engineer will be responsible for leading change initiatives for the organization and providing subject matter expertise across the organization. The Lead Cloud Engineer will also be responsible for mentoring Cloud Engineers and Senior Cloud Engineers by elevating their scope of knowledge and breadth on cloud-based systems.

The Lead Cloud Engineer will coordinate, direct, and design detailed technical implementations based on architected solutions and provides guidance to project architect throughout the project lifecycle.

Here is what you will be doing:

  • Accountable for workload, tasks and initiatives and for delivering overall product and service quality across the team. Provides an interface for feedback and information sharing within OH.
  • Provides thought leadership on cloud strategy, adoption and best practices within the Cloud and Platform Operations team, Cloud Centre of Excellence, product teams and other areas of OH to strengthen cloud support and quality services across the organization.
  • Communicates clearly within the team, product groups and across OH on a range of cloud related topics including high level concepts, design, deployment, operation, and support of new and current services.
  • Leads changes in cloud strategy, adoption approach and best practices within the Cloud and Platform Operations team, Cloud Centre of Excellence, product teams and other areas of OH.
  • Provides subject matter expertise, coaching/mentoring to cloud engineers on best practices, new cloud capabilities, and industry trends.
  • Uses code to automate system-level deployment using tools such as Terraform, AWS Cloud Formation, Bicep including identifying areas of improvement and providing guidance on new direction and delivering new artefacts to be leveraged by the team.
  • Works closely with members of the product team, and other teams such as the Cloud Centre of Excellence, Enterprise Architects and Security to design and integrate cloud services, enabling secure operations in the cloud environment.
  • Works with a high level of autonomy in setting objectives based on direction from a principal cloud engineer, team lead or management.
  • Makes decisions where results have major impact to overall service delivery and quality across the organization requiring sophisticated solutions and long-term correction.
  • Engages with other organizations and agencies external to Ontario Health.

Here is what you will need to be successful:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Information Technology, Computer-related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • 8-10 years of experience in System Support and Administration in an Enterprise environment, working experience as a senior technical resource for designing, deploying, and supporting Azure/AWS Cloud Services and supporting and managing Virtualization technologies, Container platforms, Storage Systems, Infrastructure monitoring and alerting technologies, high availability architecture in Azure/AWS Hybrid Cloud Technologies.
  • Industry certifications in Virtualization, Azure/AWS, Networking Technologies, and Office 365 certifications are an asset.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Terraform to automate the build, deploy and maintenance of Azure/AWS applications and environments.
  • Assess, define, implement, and monitor documentation management practices as required and appropriate for the project, in conjunction with applicable Ontario Government standards, including template design and maintenance; version and change control; naming conventions; and official repository(ies)
  • Advanced knowledge pertaining to design, implementation, operation and support of products and services operating in multiple cloud environments.
  • Broad knowledge of IaaS and PaaS components leveraged to implement products and services operating in one cloud provider. Expert knowledge in multiple areas of focus.
  • Advanced knowledge of migration approaches for moving legacy products and services from on-premises datacenter deployments to the cloud.
  • Knowledge of coding practices as it relates to Infrastructure as Code, building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines and using source control tools.
  • Knowledge of team and industry best practices as it relates to deployment, operations and support of products and services in the cloud provider.
  • Advanced knowledge of security best practices as it relates to the cloud in general. As well as deployment, operations and support of products and services in the cloud provider.
  • Knowledge of other IT systems and/or programs across OH and points of interaction or integration.
  • Knowledge of how cloud is being adopted and leveraged across the industry including healthcare.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills to identify gaps and areas for improvement; own the build, release, and configuration management of applications; ensure high availability, performance, scalability, and security of applications.
  • Communications skills, both orally and in writing, to communicate clearly within the team, product groups and across OH on a range of cloud related topics; mentor staff to strengthen cloud support and quality services; collaborate with product teams.
  • Ability to code to automate system-level deployment using tools such as Terraform, AWS Cloud Formation, Bicep.
  • Ability to design and implement continuous code and infrastructure delivery using CI/CD tools such as Azure DevOps, AWS Code pipelines, etc.
  • Ability to deploy, automate, and manage cloud (Azure/AWS) based systems.
  • Ability to maintain in-depth knowledge of cloud technologies and tools for multiple providers, assist IT leadership in developing roadmap for cloud integration and strategies and ability to maintain expert knowledge in multiple areas of focus.
  • Ability to work closely with members of the product team, and other teams to design and integrate cloud services, enabling secure operations in the cloud environment.
  • Ability to collaborate with product team to deliver solutions using modern DevSecOps tools and best practices and take ownership of the build, release, and configuration management of applications.
  • Ability to identify gaps in as well as create and maintain up to date operational documentation.
  • Ability to make decisions where results have a major impact across the organization.
