Looking for a new and exciting job opportunity? We are looking for a Design Engineer (SCADA & Control Systems) to join our Communications Engineering team!

What You Will Do

Reporting to the Senior Design Engineer (SCADA & Control Systems) - Communications, you will provide expertise in relation to engineering work associated with the design, transit operations, maintenance and rehabilitation of existing and future TTC SCADA & Control Systems (software & hardware). You will provide engineering support and guidance to TTC staff & labour forces (i.e. engineering, maintenance & management) and take professional responsibility for engineering work as required by the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO).

Other responsibilities of your role will include:

  • Providing complex engineering design decisions,
  • Providing new or modify existing technical documents (ex. Drawings, O&M, specifications, estimates, material lists etc.)
  • Performing Control System's related update/modification tasks (i.e. SCADA programming, PLC modifications, Windows administration, virtual environment management etc.)
  • Delivering technical training to staff/maintenance/operational personnel
  • Performing site review visits
  • Supervising/directing system installations related to transit operations activities and in relation to engineering work associated with the maintenance and rehabilitation of the Commission's SCADA & Control Systems.
  • Reviewing designs prepared by external consultants or other internal engineering departments and assisting in the overall coordination of projects conducted by internal engineering staff or external consultants
  • Investigating, evaluating and testing new, existing or proposed SCADA & Control Systems and components for TTC's transit operations' needs and providing reports and recommendations for the utilization, modification etc. of related systems.
  • Providing engineering support and guidance to operational maintenance staff outside of regular working hours including multi-overnight shifts. This may involve responding to trouble calls and other requirements of business to maintain operational integrity. This may also include guiding, directing and supervising work forces.

What Qualifications Do You Bring?

  • Your educational background will consist of the completion of a post-secondary college diploma or university degree in a related discipline (i.e. Computer Engineering, Control Systems Engineering or Electrical Engineering) or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent
  • Registration with the Professional Engineers of Ontario is mandatory.
  • Your application will demonstrate several years of directly related experience in the application of Control Systems engineering principles, methods and practices combined with real world working experience of related components that are considered vital to the function of SCADA & Control Systems.
  • You will have sound judgement and well-developed technical, analytical, problem solving, interpersonal, verbal communication and engineering report-writing skills.
  • You will also have strong knowledge of Microstation CADD systems and operations.
  • Your application will demonstrate the application of theory, practice and knowledge related to Control Systems Engineering including, Control Systems design, PLC programming, SCADA programming, control panel design and construction, instrumentation selection etc.
  • It will also demonstrate working knowledge with common industrial communication protocols such as Modbus (TCP), Ethernet/IP (CIP), OPC-DA, Telegyr 8979, IEC61850, Profinet etc.
  • Your working knowledge with various SCADA platforms, PLC software and HMI software such as: Wonderware System Platform, Schneider Electric Control Expert, Rockwell RSLogix, Rockwell Control Logix, PLCnext, Schneider Electric Vijeo Designer will be evident.
  • Your experience with GE Logicmaster 90/70 or Schneider Concept /w Modbus+ or software similar to the listed is considered an asset.
  • Your application will reveal demonstrated knowledge and application of technical standards related to Control Systems Design and construction.
  • Your strong experience in developing a Control System from concept to detailed design and seeing it through successful commissioning and startup of the system will benefit you in this role.
  • Your application will also reveal your design, installation, and commissioning experience with structured cabling, outside plant cabling which support supervisory signals & analog telephony systems.
  • You will be familiar with legacy systems such as analog telephony systems, modem based systems, legacy RTU's (Telegyr 8979).
  • Your familiarity with programming languages such C++, JAVA, C#, SQL, web technology languages is considered an asset.
  • Your familiarity and working knowledge of Windows administration environment is considered an asset.
  • Your familiarity and working knowledge of virtualization software and management is also considered an asset.
  • Your resume will demonstrate basic networking knowledge including analyzing and troubleshooting network issues related to a Control System.
  • In addition, you will have the ability to use productivity spreadsheet software to create documentation and tools to meet engineering needs and requirements.
  • You will also have the ability to provide expert guidance for system design packages produced by others TTC internal/external designers & consultants.
  • This position may require you to work in hazardous work environments (i.e. tunnels, substations, passenger stations, electrical rooms, streetcar & train yards, garages, server rooms, etc.).
  • You will be required to successfully pass TTC training courses & testing.
