Position Summary:

The Information Management and Technology (IMT) Decision Support and Data Analytics (DS&DA) Data Scientist is responsible for leveraging advanced data science techniques to support the hospital's clinical and business decision-making through advanced predictive analytics. This position involves building, deploying, and maintaining predictive models and algorithms, ensuring the integrity of data, and providing valuable insights to stakeholders. The IMT DS&DA Data Scientist reports to the Chief Information Officer and works closely with the IMT team and hospital leadership to integrate data-driven strategies, improve organizational performance, and enhance the use of analytics tools across the hospital, while also driving the hospital's data literacy initiatives.The role requires significant expertise in statistical analysis, machine learning, and data science infrastructure management. This position has a hybrid work schedule, with a requirement to be on-site at Holland Bloorview (150 Kilgour Road, Toronto) for a portion of the work week.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Analyze large and complex datasets to extract meaningful insights, using statistical and machine learning techniques.
    • Provide actionable recommendations and develop models to predict future trends and outcomes based on historical data.
    • Build, test, and refine predictive models using machine learning algorithms.
    • Deploy models into production systems for real-time decision-making.
    • Perform data quality checks, manage missing data, and integrate disparate data sources.
    • Maintain and improve existing data science infrastructure, integrating new features and capabilities.
    • Ensure the integrity and quality of enterprise data warehouse for effective decision-making.
    • Create data visualizations and dashboards to communicate complex insights to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
    • Support IMT Data Governance by increasing data literacy across the hospital.
    • Educate hospital leadership and staff on data literacy and best practices for leveraging data science.
    • Train and mentor data analysts and other team members in utilizing data science tools, modelling and evaluation.
    • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, support the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment and advance a culture of safety through work and daily practices.
    • Contribute to an inclusive and supportive work environment for all clients, families, staff, students and volunteers, where all individuals are valued and treated with respect and fairness.

Qualifications:

    • Graduate degree (Master's or PhD) in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Machine Learning, or Mathematics is required
    • 5+ years of experience in data science, particularly in statistical analysis, predictive modeling, machine learning, and data mining, with an emphasis on healthcare data
    • Previous hands-on experience analyzing large and complex datasets to extract meaningful insights and patterns. Use statistical and machine learning techniques to interpret data and provide actionable recommendations. Develop models and algorithms to predict future trends and outcomes based on historical data
    • Previous experience with Model Development and Deployment including building, testing, and refining advanced predictive models using machine learning algorithms. Implement and deploy models into production systems for real-time decision-making
    • Previous experience with creating visualization & dashboards
    • Previous experience with managing Data Science platform including maintaining and improving existing data science infrastructure by integrating new features and capabilities and managing the environments.
    • Track record of successful project delivery
    • Demonstrated knowledge of machine learning models, large language models (LLMs), and advanced analytics
    • Proficiency in statistical tools such as SPSS Modeler (preferred) or other statistical tools such as Python
    • Expertise in data visualization and experience in tools like Jupyter Notebooks and Cognos BI (preferred)
    • Ability to effectively communicate complex ideas and tell stories using data visualization
    • Communication skills to engage effectively with audiences who possess varying degrees of background knowledge in data science and data analytics
    • Demonstrated understanding of and ability to apply privacy and security standards to ensure adherence/compliance
    • Experience with hospital clinical and administrative databases is an asset.
