JOB SUMMARY

The Network Engineering and Operations Branch is responsible for network engineering and operational support and maintenance of the City of Ottawa's network infrastructure and related networking solutions, which are key enablers of the delivery of all IT services to the corporation and residents, including strategic planning for complex networking engineering technologies and projects.

You are responsible for: the day-to-day delivery of the city's technology infrastructure (TI)* and related services (e.g. e-mail, WAN/LAN, data centres, Internet) which enable or improve the city's business operations and service/program delivery to the public; architecting and implementing assigned technology infrastructure solutions to meet client requirements and/or to improve City business operations; and providing functional supervision to relevant internal technical staff (e.g. Network Analyst, Senior Network Analyst) and external consultants/contractors.
*The city's TI is large-scale and highly complex (e.g. 450+ servers; 300 facilities located across 28,000 square kilometres; and provides critical technological infrastructure for 10,000+ users; transmitting 190million e-mails per year, support for 750+ public facing computers, multiple Internet portals with e-payment capabilities (OTTAWA.CA, OCTRANSPO.COM), and over 400 business applications). The city's TI must also support the day-to-day operations of critical public facing services such as Transit Services, Fire, Paramedics and By-Law services. In addition, the city's TI needs to securely integrate and enable data-sharing with other functional networks, including those in Traffic Operations, Ottawa Police, provincial government departments, federal government departments and other external organizations (e.g. financial institutions).

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of 3 year university degree or community college diploma in computer science.
Minimum of 5 years of network related experience

KNOWLEDGE

  • Technology infrastructure design, implementation and management (including MS Active Directory, LDAP)
  • Technology infrastructure security practices and products (i.e. firewalls, virus protection)
  • Internet connectivity protocols, issues and services (e.g. TCIP/IP, QoS, VLAN)
  • IP/data/voice LAN/WAN network architecture and components (e.g. routers and switches, gateways, Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit, SNMP and protocol analyzers)
  • Infrastructure applications (i.e. Citrix)
  • Storage, Storage Switching (Cisco Nexus) and back-up technologies (i.e. Commvault, Hitachi Storage Systems)
  • E-mail systems (i.e. MS Exchange,O365)
  • Server operating systems (i.e. Microsoft Server 2003 & 2008, UNIX, Oracle versions 8, 9 & 10)
  • Virtualization technologies (i.e. VMWare)
  • Technology infrastructure hardware (i.e. HP servers, Oracle servers, CISCO Unified Computing System B - Series. UCS Fabric Interconnects, blade chassis and blades)
  • Wireless/mobile technologies (i.e. , WiFi)
  • Deployment of applications in both LAN & WAN environments and Application Delivery Controllers (F5)
  • IT Service Management practices (i.e. ITIL)
  • IT Service Management systems (i.e. Marval)
  • Infrastructure Management tools (i.e. HP Openview, CISCOWorks, SCCM, UCS Manager, server provisioning and management utilizing service profiles, templates and policies)
  • Emerging technologies, products and services relating to technology infrastructure
  • MS Office Suite and MS Visio
