The incumbent works under the management of the Information Technology Officer, and receives direction from the Faculty of Science's Manager, Administrative Services. As a Web/Multimedia/Mobile Developer, the incumbent is a member of the Faculty's collaborative communications and IT teams, providing web design, web and multimedia development, web and mobile application development support within the Faculty of Science. As a member of the Faculty of Science collaborative IT team, the incumbent also assists with frontline computer support providing secondary support and service escalation to complement the primary support provided by the computing specialists of the team.
The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
• The position requires the incumbent to have sound knowledge of computer-based systems (hardware and software). Consumer computing is based on the Windows, MacOS X and Linux workstations, desktops or laptops. Knowledge of these operation systems is essential.
• Familiarity with common software application packages. Understanding and management of open-source software is required.
• Knowledge of Windows Server, LAMP Web development tools, and integration of computer resources in a heterogeneous environment would also be an invaluable asset.
• Ability to program using scripting languages or shell scripting for system management and web development is required.
• Knowledgeable about and experience with the current state of the art web design, web development, and web application development. Specifically, web frameworks for building custom content management systems and web applications. Ability to develop database driven web applications with open source web development frameworks. Familiarity with other mobile and software development frameworks is an asset.
• Knowledge of and experience with graphics design, 2D & 3D graphics for print, web and digital reproduction, photography, and video production would be highly desirable.
• As these requirements evolve, the incumbent must have the ability to adapt quickly to new software, hardware, and emerging technologies.
• The incumbent is expected to become a leader on information technology-related issues and matters relating to the web, multimedia, and mobile; recommending and helping to implement improvements to the Faculty of Science web presence and operational infrastructure.
The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
• Four (4) year degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or Computer/Electrical Engineering, or equivalent.
• Courses in web design, web development, web programming, mobile application development, and scripting, or equivalent.
• Courses in multimedia - graphics design, 2D & 3D graphics for print, web and digital reproduction, photography, and video production, or equivalent.
• Three years of relevant experience in computer support, web design, web development, web programming, mobile application development, and multimedia.
