As a SQL Server DBA within Data Management Services (DMS), your primary role will be as a Database Engineer providing technical leadership in all facets SQL Server's use at Sunlife, both on prem and in cloud. The role consists of occasional participation in on-call, after-hours and weekend support of projects, infrastructure activities, as well as various disaster recovery exercises as may be required.

As a condition of the role, the successful candidate must obtain a Government of Canada Reliability Status security clearance through Sun Life in advance of the start date and the role will also require Star Compliance.

What will you do:

  • Provide technical leadership and direction for SQL Server. Designing new patterns of deployment, evaluating new tools to improve DMS' service to their clients
  • Define and document best practices for the global deployments of SQL Server
  • Gain knowledge of various emerging technologies, cloud technologies, DevOps tools and processes, and vendor applications
  • First point of contact for application architects or cloud teams for various engineering project initiatives requiring non-standard deployment patterns
  • Constantly research better ways of implementing SQL Server and related technologies to improve stability, reduce cost, and improve security

What do you need to succeed?

  • 5+ years of SQL Server database experience supporting both infrastructure and development teams.
  • 3+ years of administrative support of SQL Server versions including: Database Engine, Integration Services (SSIS), Analysis Services (SSAS) and Reporting Services (SSRS)
  • 3+ years of experience and support with AWS Cloud technologies and database workload
  • Manage large and complex projects and participate in a variety of projects through the entire project lifecycle
  • Insatiable desire to learn new technologies or platforms
  • Possess exceptional creativity on how to use different technologies or patterns to address business challenges.
  • Be able to express difficult technical concepts to a variety of audiences (executive, technical and business) both written and verbally
  • Organize and monitor personal workload and escalate to manager when issues arise
  • Work closely with other team members, technical/team leads, management, specialized IT areas and application support teams to ensure consistent delivery and quality of database services
  • Evaluation of functionality and features with newer versions of the SQL Server DBMS as part of a readiness program
  • Deep SQL Server knowledge that includes a thorough understanding of SQL internals, system tables, stored procedures, functions, triggers, and SQL tuning
  • Have experience managing employees
  • A desire to move into a technical people management role

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
