The Toronto office is looking for a Senior Architect to join their growing team in a full-time permanent position.

Role Description:

Reporting to the Principal, Managing Director, you will take ownership of a variety of exciting projects, coordinating with a talented staff and a team of consultants to ensure projects progress at every stage. You will be responsible for the development and coordination of business development, proposals, design, construction documents, specifications, and construction administration as well as the coordination of subconsultants as needed. The Senior Architect will work closely with clients to develop a full understanding of their needs and expectations and with the internal architectural team(s) to ensure that the final design is cost-effective and timely, while also maintaining the integrity of their vision. Most importantly, the Senior Architect will be expected to pursue new clients and new business, track prospective work and prepare and win competitive proposals for architectural projects.

Project Management:

  • Participate in Business Development initiatives and assist in pursuing new work including participation in client presentations and proposal preparation.
  • Provide oversight in the planning, implementation, execution, and evaluation of project phases.
  • Comply with accepted project management methodology; document and manage scope, work effort, budget, cost controls, schedules, etc.
  • Prioritize, manage, and work on multiple projects and deadlines if required.

Design:

  • Perform specific project building design and development tasks, including programming, reports, design and detailed drawings, cost estimates, presentations, and specifications.
  • Oversee, develop, and guide design concepts, design detailing and production of presentation materials.
  • Lead development of construction documents and follow up with design work as drawings and construction progress.
  • Support other architects with ensuring design continuity.
  • Respond to client questions and comments, review contractor submittals, and provide clarifications during construction.

Technical:

  • Act as an expert resource within discipline for delivery requirements, e.g. building code requirements, reports, studies, etc.
  • Review and understand drawings prepared by other engineering disciplines and communicate with those disciplines to ensure project documents are completely coordinated.
  • Support in site coordination, work with contractors in solving construction and site issues.
  • Oversee and lead the production of architectural drawings and models.
  • Support in maintaining and managing all project documentation related architectural design and contract administration.
  • Guide contract administration and work effectively with contractors to resolve construction/ site issues.
  • Perform effective analysis of applicable building codes, by-laws and other regulations and technical documents / reports to which a project may be subject.
  • When assigned, supervise, coordinate, and review the work of other architects, intern architects, designers, Revit, CADD, Renderings programs technicians.
  • Utilization of Revit for production of design documents and contract documentation; ability to perform quality assurance and quality control of the documentation process; redlining and ensuring that revisions are implemented.

People Level Responsibilities:

  • Improve design and technical skills of the team and ensure implementation of skills on a project by sharing expert knowledge of current design techniques, building systems, design trends and developments and providing insight, information and recommendation on sector and discipline trends.
  • Inspire and motivate; collaborates across teams.
  • Provide oversight, quality assurance and review work produced by team members to ensure that RVA standards are being met.
  • Assist in determining project staffing requirements.
  • Mentor team member by identifying areas for improvement in their work through teaching and coaching.
  • Motivate staff by engaging their creativity and recognizing achievement.
  • Role model behaviour and expectations for quality of work.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture and registration as an Architect with OAA.
  • +12 years of progressively responsible experience in Architecture.
  • Experience with business development and proposal preparation is an asset.
  • Self-starter with good problem-solving ability.
  • Strong ability to develop innovative design concepts to meet functional goals within the project budget.
  • Proven experience with Revit, CAD, Adobe Creative Suite, 3D visualization SketchUp and other graphic software is an asset.
  • Experience with transportation and industrial projects would be a definite asset.
  • Thorough knowledge of Canadian building codes and standards.
  • Proven experience managing multiple projects simultaneously, utilizing effective prioritization and time management skills to meet competing deadlines.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with clients and all levels of staff in a collaborative team environment.
  • Experience mentoring and overseeing work of more junior staff, ensuring accuracy and quality standards.
  • Experience in dealing with governmental agencies, building department, and zoning ordinances.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, clients, consultants, and contractors, or other authorities having jurisdiction as required.
  • Knowledge of professional ethics applying to the practice of architecture.
