TECHNOLOGIST - VCOM

As a Technologist - VCOM within our VCOM Department, you will be responsible for ensuring the operation and maintenance of all VCOM related systems for all partner agencies and for supporting the partners with communication system infrastructure and implementing new VCOM related features and enhancements.

 What will your typical day look like?

  • Responsible for all VCOM voice and data systems and the VCOM private LTE system, ensuring 100% up time for voice radio/data system.  Manages and maintains voice/data encryption keys; maintains paging system for Brampton, Mississauga and Caledon Fire Services.   Provides technical insights for upgrades and migrations.
  • Maintains VCOM sites and related equipment, including generators, UPS systems, Battery backup systems and HVAC.  Repairs and performs preventative maintenance on transmitters, transmission lines, antennas, multicouplers, duplexers and combiners.
  • Maintains and repairs backhaul equipment including microwave, fiber optic and T1s.  Assists with the design and implementation of wireless PTP links.
  • Maintains, repairs and installs servers, ESXi, Windows, RHEL and digital voice logging networking equipment, switches, routers, firewalls and media converters. 
  • Compile reports for users as required.  Assists with IP planning and ensuring network links meet VCOM standards. 
  • Installs and maintains VCOM dispatch consoles for all partner agencies and assists with training.
  • Repairs all VCOM site equipment, including transmitters, backhaul, generators, VCOM computer networks, and servers.
  • Designs specialized circuits to interface with equipment or parts unavailable; designs, modifies and maintains circuits/components to meet special requirements of VCOM partners.  Creates and maintains documents and assists staff.
  • Updates VCOM work orders to record parts ordered, received, warranty/3rd party repairs, etc.  Answer inquiries regarding technical information on a variety of equipment, requests parts, equipment and software to complete tasks.  Provides on-call services on a weekly basis to ensure continuous operation of all VCOM systems.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

You are someone with:

  • A Community College Diploma in Electronics at a technician level or equivalent, plus additional industry related training in the radio communications field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of five years related experience required
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computer systems, programming, network, data systems, Fiber and Microwave systems
  • Demonstrated intermediate knowledge of related computer applications pertinent to the function, e.g. MS Office
  • Well-developed technical and troubleshooting skills
  • Working knowledge of P25 conventional, Motorola Astro trunked radio and wireless mobile data systems
  • Working knowledge of Digital Simulcast, Microwave transport and Antenna systems
  • Working knowledge of RF test equipment, e.g. spectrum analyzer, monitors, wattmeter and vector network analyzers
  • Working knowledge of network test equipment, OTDR, network protocol and copper testers
  • Working knowledge of the Innovation, Science and Economic Development regulations related to communication equipment
  • Working knowledge of Health Canada Safety code 6 regulations on RF exposure
  • Demonstrated oral communications skills
  • Demonstrated analytical, research and problem solving skills
  • Valid Ontario Driver`s Licence (Class G) with full driving privileges
  • Demonstrated physical ability to perform all activities

  • Driver Evaluations
  • Lifting – TSS

 

What we offer

The salary range for this permanent, full-time position is $80,481.00 - $135,601.00 and is complemented with a comprehensive benefit program, including employer-paid Health/Dental and Life Insurance; and the OMERS Pension Plan effective upon hire. Peel Regional Police offers a highly competitive compensation package; applicants will be considered for the top end of the range ($95,572.00 - 135,601.00) based on experience.
