Who we are

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) works at the centre of the province’s power system, ensuring Ontarians have access to reliable and cost-effective electricity when and where they need it. We operate the province’s electricity grid 24/7, design, run and oversee the wholesale electricity markets, and plan and prepare to meet Ontario’s electricity needs – now and into the future.

The opportunity

The Specialist – System position will report directly to the Manager, Corporate Technology Solution and have primary responsibility to integrate, build, support and maintain the availability and security of the IESO Information Technology (IT) systems and network of the supported applications and business data. This individual should adhere to the IT policies and procedures to ensure system provisioning and maintenance is consistent with company goals, industry best practices, and regulatory requirements.

The Corporate Technology Solutions (CTS) team is a highly technical team within the I&TS Business Unit accountable for the design, configuration, administration, maintenance, and operations of application and database hosting infrastructure both on-premise and in the cloud. CTS is also responsible in maintaining middlewares supporting the various application solutions used by the business including the management and maintenance of corporate email and collaboration solution. The incumbent requires strong knowledge of the system administration of the Microsoft Windows operating system.

What you'll do

  • Develop standards, participate in the development of strategic plans and provide operational and design specifications for Information and Technology Services (I&TS) managed systems.
  • Provide systems design expertise to support the development of computer based information systems/tools to meet the needs of customers by establishing user requirements, developing system designs, integrating commercial products, code software and test systems. Provide project management support to design projects/teams or information systems or tools.
  • Design, build, and operate hosting systems which includes server and network components to deliver required system functions.
  • Manage the evolution of existing hosting systems and tools by implementing enhancements to provide additional functionality, correct problems to improve reliability, maintainability, improve server management capabilities, and respond to advanced system problems or failures to restore system functionality.
  • Perform server management duties, prepare procedures and/or support personnel involved in server management activities.
  • Research commercial products and tools which can be used in the design or support of information systems and tools and perform ongoing assessments of their ability to meet current and future requirements.
  • Provide systems consulting support to operations, maintenance or software development staff.
  • Develop procedures required for the secure operation and management of information systems or tools. Perform hosting attestation to ensure compliance to set standards, meeting requirements, and identification of improvement opportunities.
  • Act as a consultant or mentor to peers to advance their learning and facilitate their problem solving skills with their respective areas of expertise.
  • Perform other duties as required.

What you need to succeed

Education:

  • Requires a knowledge of MS Windows server management, infrastructure monitoring tools, computer science subjects and disciplines in order to design, develop and support small to large scale computer systems and networks. Specific knowledge would include system design, networking and system administration.
  • Requires a knowledge of technical writing to prepare effective reports.
  • This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired either through the successful completion of a four-year university education in the appropriate discipline, or by having the equivalent level of education.

Experience:

  • Requires considerable experience in the design, development and support of computer systems. This experience will be gained through work in the following areas:
    • Computer system architecture, design and integration
    • System networking
    • Administration and use of standard or proprietary computer operating systems
    • Development of computer applications using standard development languages
    • Support of small to large scale computer systems
    • Database design and administration.

A period of up to eight years is considered necessary to gain this experience.

  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills (written and verbal)
  • Strong analytical and reporting skills
  • Excellent design and administration knowledge of Windows Server
  • Extensive MS Office skills in MS Word, MS Excel, MS Project, MS Visio, MS Access, and MS PowerPoint
  • Ability to work in a team environment including open information sharing and mentoring of peers
  • Deadline / deliverables oriented individual
  • Demonstrates organizational skills and multi-tasking capability
  • A strong commitment to corporate and departmental objectives

The IESO offers a hybrid work model program to most of our employees, based on business needs. Individuals participating in the program can work an average of three days per week remotely within Ontario. It also offers three flex weeks when individuals can work remotely within Ontario. When working in the office, you will be located at our Mississauga, ON location.
