Job Summary

Reporting to the Supervisor, Operations, Building Services & Operations, the successful candidate will provide a controlled and safe environment for City employees, tenants, and members of the public located within the Civic Centre, Central Library, and Living Arts Centre, including trouble shooting, repairing, monitoring, diagnosing and maintaining all HVAC, mechanical and life safety systems.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Respond to requests for service from building tenants; make alterations or repairs to environmental systems as required.
  • Monitor and control the building environmental systems by conducting regular inspections of mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Carry out daily rounds and inspections of mechanical equipment within the Civic Centre facilities and make adjustments as required.
  • Maintain log and records of operational and maintenance activity; test and record water systems, utility readings and life safety systems (sprinklers).
  • Ensure proper safety procedures are followed at all times.
  • Liaise with external vendors to assist in carrying out work.
  • Maintain good public relations by presenting a professional, knowledgeable and conscientious image to the public.
  • Keep abreast of new technology and changes to regulations.
  • Provide assistance to other Building Services and Operations staff members.
  • Perform minor tasks such as lamp replacement; filter changes; picture hanging; keyboard tray adjustments; cleaning of equipment and rooms.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

  • A minimum of Grade 12 or approved equivalency.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in general building repairs, construction and maintenance.
  • General skills in the electrical and mechanical field are required.
  • Certificate of Qualification in a maintenance related trade would be an asset.
  • Must be proficient in the reading and interpretation of blueprints, specifications and other technical documentation.
  • Demonstrated problem solving, trouble shooting, and manual dexterity skills and the ability to climb ladders and work on equipment on roofs or other interior or exterior heights.
  • Able to identify potential problems and respond to emergency situations by taking the appropriate corrective action.
  • Carry out maintenance work on mechanical, electrical systems and equipment.
  • Must be familiar with all applicable municipal and provincial codes, regulations, legislations and by-laws (i.e. Ontario Building Code, Occupational Health and Safety Act, TSSA codes and regulations and WHMIS).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills as well as the ability to work in a team based environment are essential.
  • Must be proficient with computer systems in order to use the computerized Building Automation Systems and other software applications in use by the City.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
  • Must be available and willing to work overtime as required.

Hourly Rate/Salary: $ 62,184.00 - $ 85,232.00
