The Database Administrator at London Hydro will play a key role in managing and enhancing corporate databases, ensuring performance, security, and reliability. This role requires expertise in database management, cloud-based solutions, and disaster recovery planning to support business operations.

The successful candidate will oversee database optimization, troubleshoot critical issues, and implement best practices for security and performance. Reporting to the Director of Information Systems, you will be instrumental in maintaining robust data infrastructure and supporting cross-functional teams with technical solutions.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Database Management and Optimization

  • Install, configure, and maintain database management systems (DBMS) such as Oracle, HANA DB to ensure optimal functionality.
  • Set up and administer test databases for application testing, system support, and upgrades.
  • Support the design and implementation of database structures and architectures, including schemas, tables, indexes, and stored procedures.
  • Manage regular upgrades and oversee day-to-day database operations, maintaining data integrity and system efficiency.
  • Monitor and optimize database performance, tuning queries and configurations to improve response times and resource utilization.
  • Monitor and optimize the performance of cloud-based databases (such as AWS, Google Cloud platform) to ensure that they meet the organization’s requirements.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve database issues promptly, ensuring minimal disruption to operations.
  • Perform administrative functions for the various applications that use the databases (such as SAP HANA cockpit, Oracle Enterprise Manager), and hazards.
  • Support vendors and consultants during the installation of new applications and hardware.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather and analyse requirements, providing technical solutions that meet business needs.

Data Security, Backup, and Disaster Recovery

  • Ensure database security by implementing access controls, encryption, and auditing measures, in consultation with the Senior DBA.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously maintain comprehensive backup and recovery procedures for all databases, ensuring high availability, robust backup solutions, and an effective Disaster Recovery Plan to safeguard data integrity and minimize downtime, in consultation with the Senior DBA.

Safety and Others

  • Adhere to all Occupational Health & Safety Act rules and regulations, the IHSA’s EUS rulebook, and London Hydro work practices. Report all injuries and near misses immediately. Perform all activities in a manner that protects the health and safety of yourself and others. Wear personal protective equipment as required. Understand and comply with London Hydro Health and Safety policies.
  • Perform other duties related to the above job purpose.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, or a related field from a recognized university, preferred.
  • Database management certifications would be an asset (Oracle Database Administration Certified Professional, Oracle Data Guard Administrator, or SAP Certified Associate - Database Administrator)
  • More than 5 years of hands-on experience with database management, utilization, and operating systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of SQL, PL/SQL, MySQL and SQL Script.
  • 3-5 years of experience of OEM.
  • Experienced with CommVault backup application.
  • Extensive knowledge of Oracle, SAP HANA
  • Experience with table management techniques such as table partition, load/unload table into memory, and Native Storage Extension for enhanced performance.
  • Familiarity with NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB) and big data platforms is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of database monitoring and performance tuning techniques.
  • Experience with SAP BODS is considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with database security practices (e.g., encryption, access control, auditing).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
  • The position necessitates a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing project requirements and priorities.
