Job Opportunity: Independent ContractorSr. Data Engineer

Are you a skilled professional looking for an exciting opportunity to collaborate with a dynamic organization? Ontario One Call is seeking an independent contractor to provide specialized services in overseeing the implementation of data quality reporting frameworks, ensuring the accuracy, consistency, and timeliness of data across departments. The specialist will also support the Fabric process audit, review, and optimize data processes, and manage both pre-production and production data environments. This is a contract-based role, not an employee position, and requires applicants to operate as a separate business entity.

Ontario One Call acts as the communications link between buried infrastructure owners (our members) and individuals who are planning to dig in the province of Ontario. In 2012, the Ontario Underground Infrastructure Notification System Act was passed, which stipulates that by law, anyone in the province of Ontario must contact Ontario One Call before they dig. In addition to our contact centre, we are also responsible for public education, industry outreach, and compliance.

Position Overview

As an independent contractor for a Senior Data Engineer, the incumbent will optimize data operations and ensure the seamless flow of information across systems. The ideal candidate will have expertise in designing, developing, and maintaining scalable data pipelines and architecture, as well as advanced proficiency in real-time data processing, data modeling, and ETL processes. This role plays a critical part in shaping the future of OOC’s data infrastructure, ensuring accurate, timely, and high-quality reporting across the organization.

The Senior Data Engineer will work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to develop and maintain robust data solutions that support business intelligence, analytics, and decision-making. This role is integral to Ontario One Call’s ongoing digital transformation efforts 

 

Primary Duties

  • Analyze and interpret raw data to extract meaningful insights for various business stakeholders.
  • Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines to streamline workflows and ensure the integrity of data.
  • Optimize ETL processes to enable efficient data transformation, integration, and accessibility.
  • Implement best practices for data architecture, security, and performance.
  • Work with structured and unstructured data sources to create unified datasets.
  • Drive batch and real-time data integrations across business applications.
  • Utilize cloud-based tools to manage and monitor data infrastructure effectively.
  • Collaborate with analysts, data scientists, and engineering teams to ensure data solutions align with business objectives.
  • Adhere to data governance policies, compliance requirements, and data quality standards.
  • Continuously monitor and improve system performance, identifying opportunities for optimization and scalability.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering or related roles.
  • Strong proficiency in SQL, ETL development, and workflow automation.
  • Hands-on experience with Python for data processing and optimization.
  • Experience with cloud data platforms like BigQuery, AWS, or Azure.
  • Advanced communication skills in English for effective collaboration.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in designing scalable data architectures and storage solutions.
  • Experience with relational and NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, etc.).
  • Knowledge of real-time data processing and streaming solutions.
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools for reporting and analysis.
  • Web analytics experience is a plus.
  • Cloud certifications (GCP, AWS, Azure) are highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, version control (Git), and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills to work across diverse teams.
