Job Summary
The University of British Columbia (UBC) has embarked on a multi-year project to transform its academic and administrative support processes and systems environments for the entire UBC community. Workday Student implementation in the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (G+PS) and College of Graduate Studies (COGS) requires managing and overseeing projects for the development, implementation and adoption of all aspects of the new Student Information Systems (SIS), including all aspects of data management, analysis and reporting. G+PS and COGS need expanded capacity to understand the new data landscape, validate reports delivered by the Integrated Renewal Program (IRP) teams and effectively transition to working within Workday. The Data Analyst will help teams in both graduate schools to manage their ongoing work and to understand the data and reporting capabilities of Workday to continue business as usual.
The Data Analyst provides data collection, analysis, and reporting for G+PS, COGS, graduate program offices and external audiences, in aid of planning, policy formulation, and decision-making activities related to graduate education and postdoctoral fellows; supports data management across the graduate student lifecycle from admission, enrolment, and progression to graduation and beyond; implements data applications for specific user groups; solves complex data problems, and communicates effectively both in speech and in writing.
Organizational Status
Professional team member of the Communications and Strategic Initiatives (CASI) group within the Dean's Office in the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Reports to the Manager, Data Systems and Analysis. Liaises with team leads/managers as necessary on their data needs. The Data Analyst may supervise student workers.
Work Performed
This position requires a broad data skill set and performs tasks associated with collecting, cleaning, analyzing, visualizing and distributing data to deliver meaningful information for decision-making and reporting. This position is responsible for assessing needs and creating applications for operational use and display of admissions and enrolment data for graduate students at UBC.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Decision-making is based on a thorough knowledge of the policies and procedures of the University and the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. The position exercises considerable judgment and must demonstrate tact and discretion within established guidelines and regulations.
The results of data analysis, reports and research will be used in formulating policy, making decisions relating to the future of graduate education at the university, and evaluating the effectiveness of programs and policies and assist in data driven decision making for resource allocation. Hence errors in design, interpretation or analysis of research could have far reaching consequences. The validity of these decisions is therefore dependent upon comparability, reliability, statistical significance, representation, corroboration, and construct validity of the survey research.
Errors could result in inefficient resource allocation, the continuation of poor practices, poor advice to administrators, reputational risks, and have adverse effects on morale and public relations. Any errors and/or omissions in judgment could seriously undermine the roles, responsibilities and effectiveness of G+PS and/or COGS. Errors in the maintenance of compliance with data security and privacy policies could lead to data breaches which could compromise the privacy of past and current graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, and the integrity and trustworthiness of G+PS, COGS and UBC.
Supervision Received
