Communications Officer – Graphic Design NCCIH

National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health (NCCIH) Regular, Full-time

Purpose

Reporting to the Communications Manager of the National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health (NCCIH), the Communications Officer – Graphic Design NCCIH is responsible for a full range of communications activities, including the creation, design, and management of content for print and digital publications.

About the NCCIH

The National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health was established in 2005 and is funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada. It is one of six National Collaborating Centres (NCCs) across Canada mandated to promote and support the timely use of scientific research and other knowledges in public health practice, programs, and policies. Situated on the traditional territory of the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation in Prince George, B.C., the NCCIH is hosted by the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC), a small, research-intensive university serving rural, remote, and northern populations. Responsibilities

Duties include but are not limited to:

Typesetting, design, and layout of documents for print and web publications to established NCCIH visual identity standards using Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat Pro;

Optimizing finalized PDF documents for email, web, desktop printing, and professional print shops with appropriate colour profiles, resolutions, hyperlinks, and metadata tagging;

Creating vector-based infographics, data visualizations, tables, and diagrams for print and web publications;

Liaising with contractors such as printers and translators, as needed in the production of print and digital media materials in multiple formats and languages;

Liaising with NCCIH research staff or external subject matter experts for print and digital publication content and quality assurance processes;

Contributing to the acquisition and management of stock photos for print and digital media materials;

Providing design and communications support for NCCIH events including conferences and meetings;

Working with the Communications Manager to define and maintain the visual identity standards, guidelines, and manuals for internal and external audiences;

Designing and creating new content in consultation with the Communications Manager to support and reflect the priorities, direction and work of the NCCIH;

Contributing to the development, implementation, and evaluation of communications processes by recommending improvements and efficiencies with respect to all media employed; and

Providing communications support for NCCIH media relations.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess the following:

A degree or diploma in Graphic Design, Digital Design, Fine Arts, or Visual Communications together with 3+ years of relevant experience in visual and graphic design, digital design, visual identity compliance management, and brand building;

Demonstrated experience, with 3+ years of relevant experience, creating, designing, planning, and managing content for print and digital publications;

Demonstrated proficiency, with 3+ years of relevant experience, using the Adobe Creative Suite, specifically InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat Pro;

Demonstrated competence using Microsoft 365, SharePoint, and Teams;

Advanced skills using Microsoft Office software specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;

Demonstrated knowledge of or experience working with First Nations, Inuit, and Metis peoples and organizations;

Excellent interpersonal skills, effective oral and written communication skills, and excellent problem-solving and time management skills;

Ability to work independently in a busy and challenging environment, as an active member of an integrated team;

Strong organization skills and excellent attention to detail with the ability to prioritize workload in an environment with multiple and changing deadlines; and

Fluency in French would be considered an asset.

An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

Equivalent experience for candidates without a diploma or degree would need a seasoned professional level of 5 to 7+ years of graphic design expertise and an excellent design portfolio with demonstrated skill using the Adobe design software that must include daily use of InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat Pro. Work experience details should speak to a solid understanding of creative thinking, graphic design principals, colour theory, design theory, typography, visual identity standards compliance, desktop publishing, document optimization, and brand building.

Salary

This position has been classified at a Grade 9. The annual salary range for this position is $70,215.60 to $73,127.60 and the normal starting salary will be $70,215.60.

Normal hours of work will be 8:30am – 4:30pm, Monday through Friday.
