The student information technology developer will engage in an exciting relationship with an appointed mentor and work with the greater team creating high quality software solutions. Specific areas of learning will cover application of industry standard processes, practices, and techniques to develop web-based applications and APIs. There will be extensive opportunity to work closely with the development team and business stakeholders to develop appropriate object-oriented software systems that meet WestJet's business, technical and quality requirements.

The potential of enhancing existing software systems to ensure ongoing usability, performance and maintainability is endless. This role will align impeccably with an energetic self-starter who has a strong work ethic and willingness to learn. This role can start June 1st or September 1st with an end date of August 30, 2026.

Key Deliverables

This opportunity will present learning opportunities in the following disciplines:

  • Greater understanding of WestJet's product features and environments
  • Exposure to design, development methodologies, coding standards and style guidelines
  • Participate in workshops, presentations, and training that provide skill and knowledge development for the team
  • Learn to work with business stakeholders to define and prepare functional and design specifications of new features/products
  • Pair with team members to complete tasks, code reviews, and perform demos
  • Become skilled in providing accurate estimates for development effort, complexity, and risk for WestJet software development projects
  • Understand the development of automated unit, acceptance, and integration tests for back-end code that define and validate feature/product requirements
  • Study the development of robust, extensible, high-quality code that meet business, technical and quality requirements
  • Discover the workflow between operational partners to ensure the supportability of new features/products and to provide timely technical support and fixes to production applications
  • Gather, review, and provide input and analysis for back-end code, as well as unit tests and automated tests
  • Document system components, related interfaces and provide input into preparing release notes

Education & Business Acumen

  • Enrolled in an applicable University Program with 3 years completed towards your bachelor's degree/ or new graduate in computer science, software engineering or equivalent
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills including exceptional planning and organizational skills
  • Must be analytical and have effective problem-solving skills
