ABOUT THE ROLE

The Business Relation Manager position has the accountability to drive strategic engagement with Growth and Generation business units to align their strategy and vision with I&T priorities and objectives for the purpose of delivering technology solutions that enable value for TransAlta. They proactively share knowledge of technology risks and opportunities to build competitive advantage and improve efficiency and effectiveness of those business units. They partner with business leadership and other key stakeholders to define capability requirements, opportunities and prioritize projects based on predefined criteria (i.e. return on investment, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance, etc.). They play a leadership role in enabling the business to achieve their objectives through effective use of technology. They are ultimately accountable for technology strategy development, solution delivery, service management, risk management and relationship management.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Lead the creation and execution of multi-year business technology roadmaps that align with the business vision and I&T strategic goals. Collaborate with business leaders to prioritize initiatives that drive success and enable business objectives.
  • Work closely with I&T solution architects and subject matter experts to ensure that technology solutions align with business strategies, emerging trends, and I&T enterprise architecture governance.
  • Use in-depth knowledge of the industry and cutting-edge technologies to identify opportunities for transforming business operations and advancing business objectives.
  • Stay informed on industry trends, competition, and future directions. Leverage best practices from other organizations to bring innovative ideas and solutions to the business.
  • Engage and influence key business and I&T stakeholders at all levels to drive technology initiatives that benefit the business and TransAlta. Build business cases for new investments and present them to leadership.
  • Address challenges such as differing agendas, political considerations, and resistance to change to ensure successful project outcomes.
  • Serve as the main point of contact between business units, the I&T organization, and vendor partners, ensuring alignment across all functional areas.
  • Demonstrate strong analytical skills, including a solid understanding of business economics and financial resources to support decision-making.
  • Develop a deep understanding of key business activities for each unit, and the I&T services needed to support them.
  • Ensure the business has the solutions it needs, when it needs them, and through the most effective media channels.
  • Collaborate with the IT Delivery team to prioritize and manage the execution of projects across the IT organization.
  • Take accountability for launching solutions and ensuring they positively impact the organization.
  • Ensure the project team provides regular updates on status, issues, and changes, and that key project metrics are communicated to stakeholders.
  • Work with business analysts, project managers, and business units to ensure that project requirements are well understood, documented, and approved by all stakeholders.
  • Contribute to strategic and budgetary planning processes, using business technology roadmaps to guide annual budgets and long-term forecasts for respective business areas
  • Serve as an escalation point for major issues related to I&T services, ensuring prompt resolution.
  • Act as a champion for the business, showing a deep commitment to the business's success.

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience, including 5+ years in IT and business roles, with at least 3 years in leadership and 5 years in strategic planning and/or project portfolio execution.

  • Familiarity with Generation, Project Development, Project Engineering, Land, and Renewable Energy is an asset.

  • 7-10 years of experience leading business and IT programs/projects.

  • 5+ years of experience across diverse technical environments and business segments, including 3+ years managing teams responsible for strategic planning, business development, or client management.

  • Strong leadership in guiding and motivating IT and business teams.

  • Ability to build trust between technical and business stakeholders.

  • Skilled in managing competing priorities and technical uncertainties.

  • Experience identifying and implementing productivity improvements.

  • Proficiency in risk mitigation, performance monitoring, and forecasting.

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.

  • Adaptable, resilient, and capable of working in ambiguity.

  • Highly self-motivated with a proactive approach to continuous learning and improvement.

  • Strong relationship-building skills with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Ability to work independently while fostering collaboration.

  • Willingness to travel as required.
