Do Quebecers Trust the Internet?

In the workplace or in personal life, the use of the internet and other digital tools has become an integral part of consumer habits. Despite more frequent use, Quebecers nonetheless retain a certain reticence about security, a NETendances survey conducted by CEFRIO found.

When we use digital tools, we leave traces of our passage on servers. This digital footprint on social media is a concern for 73% of Quebecers, who worry about mistakenly communicating an address, a telephone number or even credit card information. In fact, only 21% of people interviewed consider social media to be “very or fairly safe”.

Confidence reigns with respect to government and financial institutions

When it is necessary to transmit personal information to the government and financial institutions, 59% of Quebecers are quite confident, 53% don’t have any questions when shopping on the major merchants such as Amazon, Canadian Tire or Best Buy, who they believe are “safe or fairly safe“.

In other consumer habits, purchases on travel agent and leisure sites are considered safe by 28% of those interviewed and 33% of retailers.

Deleting your passage

Despite certain fears about security, few Quebecers will erase their tracks. Although 69% of internet users delete their browsing history at least once a month, only 49% have changed their security settings, 37% have used private browsing and 30% use an addon for protection of personal information.
